Individual Children’s Therapy (Ages 9–10)
When Should I Consider Individual Children’s Therapy?
Children often face emotional and behavioural challenges like anxiety, outbursts, attention issues, or social struggles. If these concerns begin to affect daily life, it may be time to explore additional support.
At FFEW, we offer individual therapy starting at age 9. For younger children, we focus on working directly with parents, which research shows is the most effective path to change. Our team, including founder and Child Psychologist Dr. Zia, specializes in supporting children’s mental health through both parent-focused and child-focused care.

Our Parent-Inclusive Approach
For children under 10, research shows that parent involvement is essential. Therapy is often most effective when it includes support for you as the parent — not just the child. That’s why our work may include:
- Parent coaching – evidence-based guidance for home
- Conjoint sessions – building trust and emotional safety between you and your child
- SPACE model – helping parents reduce behaviours that unintentionally reinforce anxiety

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to common questions parents ask about this service—so you can feel more confident about what to expect.
How do I know if my child needs therapy?
If your child is experiencing anxiety, frequent emotional outbursts, difficulty in relationships, or challenges with focus and behavior that impact daily life, therapy may be helpful. We’re happy to talk it through with you.
Will I be involved in the sessions?
Yes. For children under 10, parent involvement is central. You’ll receive coaching and support, and in some cases, join conjoint sessions with your child.
Do you offer assessments or diagnoses?
We offer thorough clinical assessments as part of the intake process, but we do not provide formal diagnoses. If needed, we can refer you to trusted professionals.
How long does therapy usually last?
Every child is different. Some families work with us for a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll revisit goals and progress regularly together.
What if my child doesn’t want to go to therapy?
We use a warm, play-based approach to help children feel safe and at ease. Most children adjust quickly and come to enjoy their sessions once they feel understood.
