Clinical Therapist – Student Intern

Children and adolescents often experience strong and overwhelming emotions for many different reasons. These emotional difficulties can underlie challenges such as anxiety, depression, and behavioural concerns. At times, these emotions may feel unmanageable for young people, and it can be equally challenging for parents to know how to best support their child during these moments. I use a client-centred and evidence-based approach to help children, youth, and families better understand and manage emotions. I work collaboratively with young people and their caregivers to build strategies that promote emotional regulation, resilience, and stronger relationships. My goal is to empower clients with tools they can use not only today, but also as new challenges arise in the future.  Through evidence-based support and a caring environment, young people and families gain confidence in their ability to navigate difficult feelings and situations. They develop practical skills to manage emotions, strengthen their connections, and foster overall well-being. This creates a foundation where children feel supported and able to thrive both now and in the long term.

Katherine Benvenuto is an aspiring child and adolescent psychologist working under the supervision of Dr. Zia Lakdawalla. She is currently completing her PhD in Clinical-Developmental Psychology at York University, where she also earned her M.A. in 2023 and B.Sc. in 2017. Katherine has been supporting children, teens, and families for over 12 years in both clinical and community settings. She has experience providing care through the York University Psychology Clinic (YUPC) and Flourish Health Services, as well as working alongside child welfare agencies on projects that help youth and families navigate challenges and build resilience. Katherine is passionate about helping young people manage emotions, strengthen relationships, and feel supported as they grow.
